There are tons of nutritional advice on the Internet - and the sheer amount of information can be confusing, conflicting and tough to amalgamate. Calories (C) come from three sources: carbohydrates, fats and proteins. These are macronutrients and we need them in large quantities, along with water.
Nutrient intake (N) comes from micronutrients such as vitamins, minerals, fibres and phytonutrients - and they are typically non-caloric nutrients which are vital for good health.
The key to good health is to increase your nutrient density - to predominantly eat foods that have a relatively high proportion of nutrients (non-caloric food factors) to calories (carbohydrates, fats and protein).
COMMIT TO UNDERSTANDING THIS FOOD PYRAMID
This nutritional pyramid by Dr. Fuhrman is based on the principles of high nutrient eating. At the base of the pyramid - food that we should consume in high quantities are vegetables. 90% of our daily diet should be made up of nutrient-rich plant foods, whose calories are accompanied by health-promoting phytochemicals: green and cruciferous vegetables; fresh fruits, beans/legumes, raw nuts, seeds, avocados, starchy/non starchy vegetables and whole grains (brown rice, whole wheat pasta etc).
